Best Sleeping Bags for Side and Stomach Sleepers (vs. Quilts)

If you are a side or stomach sleeper, you might have a difficult time finding sleep systems that work well for you in the backcountry. Quilts are often a big improvement over claustrophobic sleeping bags because they are so much less constrictive (and I LOVE my UGQ Bandit despite the video’s silly thumbnail!). However, quilts are also more prone to cold drafts if you move around a lot in your sleep. Here I show a sleep pad and three sleeping bags made especially for side or stomach sleepers.

  1. Greetings Backcountry Pilgrim_

Thanks for the awesome review of our TerraLite- we definitely appreciate it. A good night’s sleep is crucial when you are in the backcountry, whether is a few nights out on a local trail or a few weeks in the Himalayas, and at WM it’s our mission to deliver that comfort for all types of sleepers.

    Happy Trails,
    Western Mountaineering

  2. Man, my traditional mummy bag has given me a love/hate relationship with backpacking. It was affordable, packs down light and small even for a synthetic, and keeps me warm, but damn do I sleep like crap in it. I’m also a side and stomach roll around a lot sleeper. I really like the idea of the Cloud. The zipperless design seems really nice, as well as the pad sleeve. However, the pad sleeve apparently only fits 2.5″ thick pad, but it looks like you’re able to fit your Tensor which is apparently 3.5″ thick. So the sleeve will take a 3″+ pad? Also, how’s the zipperless design? Not drafty and plenty of fabric to keep wrapped around you?

  3. I too am a side & stomach sleeper and I like your selections EXCEPT the Sierra Designs Cloud 20. Due to a double sale several years ago I could not resist the very good LL Bean -20 F.winter mummy. The size Long give me (5′ 10″) some room at the foot for boot liners water bottle, batteries, etc.
My -20 F. 750 fill down mummy, size Long from LL Bean (discontinued years ago) is an excellent mummy with elasticized draw cords and great neck collar.
My mattresses a Thermarest X-therm NXT size Large (25″ wide). This combination is good to close to -20 F. as that is a COMFORT rating for the mummy. Colder than that means down booties, down pants and light down jacket worn inside the bag PLUS a thick wool balaclava. and special face mask with copper screening breathing area for warming incoming air. I have those extras and know they will work. My mummy is large enough inside to accommodate the extra clothing.

  4. I’m not only a side sleeper for the most part, but I like to sleep with my arm extended, either the left or right depending on what side I’m laying on, and in a perfect world for me would prefer a right side zip. I couldn’t stand a mummy type bag, so that terralite has me interested. Seems like a fair amount of room. Have never used a down bag before. May try that one. Thanks for sharing.
